The City’s Quiet Resistance Everyday defiance Madame Manec organizes local women to misdirect supplies, alter signs, and circulate messages against the occupiers. A dangerous choice Etienne resists joining them until Madame argues that inaction also enables the system. He eventually uses his hidden transmitter to pass information. A Fragile Liberation Leaving the ruins Werner and Marie-Laure leave separately during the cease-fire. Marie-Laure reaches civilians, while Werner is captured by French Resistance fighters. After the battle American forces free prisoners at Fort National and take the remaining German positions. Etienne and Marie-Laure reunite and begin the long work of returning to Paris. The end of the siege brings relief, but not restoration of those lost or the lives already transformed.
